Our national and local economies are undergoing a difficult period. We are still embedded in two major international wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and possibly Yemen. The threat of a nuclear Iran continues to concern us, Israel, and the entire world. There is an old Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times.” Well, these are indeed interesting times, but they need not be a curse. As the new year approaches it is a time for reflection and taking stock of our lives. We as Jews have the blessing of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These holidays provide Jews with a special opportunity to slow down our busy lives, regroup our emotions, and face the new year with renewed courage and conviction.
The Temple Beth Sholom Men’s Club will be starting the new year with a full program. We have a general membership meeting on September 26 at the school building on the TBS campus. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. with a lox and bagels breakfast. We will have a short business meeting and an interesting educational program. Additional meetings will be held on the 4th Sunday of each month. Men’s Club meetings are open to all Temple Beth Sholom men and their guests (including wives and children).
In conjunction with the Sisterhood we will once again be offering a monthly Movie Night at the synagogue. Movies will be shown on the first Sunday evening of each month at 7:00 p.m. and are free to all TBS members and their guests. Refreshments will be served. On October 3 we will start our season with Arranged. Others scheduled for this season include Live and Become, Everything is Illuminated, The Impossible Spy, Lemon Tree, A Price Above Rubies, The Pianist, and Ushpizin. These are all terrific movies that I’m sure you will enjoy.
Also in conjunction with the Sisterhood we are planning a Pre-Passover Barbecue on April 10, 2011. We hope to build upon our success of last year. Stay tuned for more details.
Additional plans include a tailgate party at the Space Coast Stadium for a spring-practice baseball game. We also plan to hold our annual golf tournament on May 22, 2011.
We at the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Sholom wish you all a healthy and happy New Year. May you all find peace and contentment in 5771. May your lives be full and prosperous.
Shana Tova!
